2016 Industry Awards Nominations

For more than 30 years, COMTO's Industry Awards have recognized individuals, organizations, and COMTO chapters who have made outstanding contributions to the transportation industry. Industry Award honorees come from all sectors of the transportation industry, are nominated by COMTO members, and vetted by a dedicated committee of industry professionals.

The 2016 Industry Awards will take place on July 12, 2016 as the closing banquet and awards ceremony of the 2016 National Meeting and Training Conference in Dallas, TX. Tickets to the Industry Awards are included with Conference registration. Register now!

Submitting Nominations 

Any COMTO member in good standing may nominate an individual or chapter for an award. Nominations must include a one-page letter of endorsement written by a COMTO Chapter President or a National Board of Directors Member. 

 

Nominations must be submitted online only and must be received by June 10, 2016.. Paper/fax/email nominations will not be accepted at any time.

Awards

Thomas G. Neusom Founders' Leadership Award

The Thomas G Neusom Founders' Leadership Award is the highest honor bestowed by COMTO. It honors public and private transportation executives and policymakers responsible for the direction and operation of their agency or organization and who, through their affiliation with COMTO, have made outstanding contributions towards the growth and development of people of color within the transportation industry and have given continued and outstanding service and leadership to the organization. This award is reserved for a COMTO member who demonstrates, in his or her everyday life, the same spirit of achievement as COMTO's founders.

 

The recipient of this award:

  • Supports COMTO's mission, and demonstrates strong leadership within their local community, both as a supporter and innovator in equal opportunity programs that provide greater access for people of color in the transportation industry.
  • Will have demonstrated their efforts in promoting diversity and economic development of small and emerging businesses, promoting transportation initiatives, and setting benchmarks for leadership -- especially during exciting and/or challenging times. 
  • Has undisputedly exemplified the highest standards of professional integrity and conduct, has achieved stature in the transportation industry, and holds the esteem of colleagues and peers.

Gerald Anderson Service Award

The Gerald Anderson Service Award was established to recognize a COMTO member who has demonstrated commitment to the philosophy that the success of one is contingent upon the success of all. This is award is COMTO's way of recognizing good service and the value of teamwork within the transportation industry, and is given to ensure growth and development within the industry and community. The first Gerald Anderson Service Award was presented to COMTO's founding members for the perseverance and belief that there is a viable role for minorities within the industry.


Corporation of the Year Award

This award recognizes a corporate executive whose corporation, through his or her leadership, has consistently provided exemplary support to COMTO "above and beyond" by contributing to COMTO's mission and goals both nationally and through their local COMTO chapter. The recipient of this award has demonstrated their efforts in promoting diversity and economic development of small and emerging businesses, promoting transportation initiatives, and setting benchmarks for leadership -- especially during exciting and challenging times.This award is open to non-members.

 

The Reverend Jerry Moore President's Leadership Award

The "Reverend Jerry Moore Leadership Award" was established in 2011 to recognize a COMTO Chapter President who has demonstrated exemplary leadership within COMTO, whose involvement has made a significant impact in their local chapter, and has demonstrated solid leadership on the national level. The recipient of this award has demonstrated outstanding skills in developing and managing chapter programs and initiatives, and has enhanced COMTO's image. He or she has demonstrated support for COMTO's mission on a local and national level, and has increased their chapter's participation at COMTO's National Meeting and Training Conference.

 

Emerging Leader Award

The Emerging Leader Award is given to an individual who has been involved in the transportation industry for fewer than 5 years. This award is presented to an individual who, throughout their affiliation with COMTO, has demonstrated extraordinary competence in a chosen transportation-related field by developing and improving their leadership skills and possesses a strong commitment to the transportation field and community.The individual deserving of this award is one who is inspired to implement self-improvement initiatives and who positively impacts and influences others. The recipient clearly demonstrates a commitment to COMTO's vision, and the transportation industry and community, through extraordinary leadership. This award is open to non-members.

 

Industry Innovation Award - SAFETY

The Industry Innovation Award recognizes an individual, organization, city, or region for quantifiable and measurable innovative improvements within the transportation industry. The recipient of this award understands the challenge of providing safe and reliable service amidst the increasing needs and rapidly growing demands of their city's/region's transportation infrastructure. The recipient has made a significant contribution towards increasing passenger and public safety through the use of technology assets into an interactive and seamless network.This award is open to non-members.

 

Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUB) Firm of the Year Award

The Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUB) Firm of the Year award was introduced in 2003 to recognize HUBs that have demonstrated a strong commitment to the field of transportation and extraordinary competence in a chosen transportation-related field. The recipient of this award is a HUB nominated by a local COMTO chapter, and is actively engaged in, and strongly supports, COMTO's mission. This award is open to non-members.

 

CHAPTER AWARDS

Chapter of the Year Award

The Chapter of the Year award is the highest honor bestowed upon a chapter for its outstanding service, activities, and enhancement of COMTO's image. A chapter must be in good standing, and demonstrate its alignment with COMTO's mission through programs and that foster membership growth and retention, professional development, and community outreach. The recipient of this award has demonstrated an overall excellence and effectiveness in COMTO activities, both nationally and locally. Chapters formed prior to March 31, 2013 are eligible for this award.

 

Emerging Chapter of the Year Award

The Emerging Chapter of the Year award is presented to a COMTO chapter that has demonstrated a superior commitment to COMTO, has helped enhance COMTO's image within the transportation industry, has shown significant achievement in increasing their local membership, and has implemented successful transportation-related programs or projects within their community. The recipient of this award will have demonstrated overall effectiveness as a new chapter, and will have been a COMTO chapter formed between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2016 to be eligible for this award. 

 

Best Membership Recruitment / Retention Activities Award

The Best Membership Recruitment / Retention Activities award is presented to an active COMTO chapter that has successfully demonstrated excellence in recruiting and retraining members. This award recognizes both creativity in strategic program development and a commitment to enhance a broad and diverse membership. The recipient of this award has successfully demonstrated excellent in innovative recruitment activities to recruit new members outside the traditional public transportation industry, into modes that include airports, highways, maritime, ports, railroad, and student transportation, which has resulted in increased membership. 


Best COMTO Community Engagement Award

The Best COMTO Community Engagement award is presented to an active COMTO chapter that has successfully demonstrated excellence in the planning and implementation of community activities or events that enhance COMTO's image. The recipient of this award has implemented outreach and engagement opportunities for its membership through community service, COMTO Week, Garrett A. Morgan Shadow Day, or other youth-related educational activities. 


Harold B. Williams "Game Changer" Award

The Harold B. Williams "Game Changer" award is presented to a resurging COMTO chapter that has demonstrated their ability revitalize thier membership through new and improved programs and activities. This award recognizes a chapter whose membership has substantially increased after a 3 or more year period of dormancy. The recipient of this award has distinguished itself as a chapter on the move with a renewed commitment to COMTO's vision and goals.
