COMTO Members Win Big at MoDOT External Civil Rights’ DBE Symposium

On February 28th and March 1st, over a dozen COMTO members attended the Missouri Department of Transportation’s 2017 Contractor Compliance/DBE Training Symposium. This conference provides vital information in a variety of areas, such as business and work force development, contract compliance, recruitment, and retention. Additionally, the symposium aims to strengthen Equal Employment Opportunity of both MoDOT and Missouri businesses by encouraging the development of a diverse workforce.

The symposium consisted of all sorts of breakout sessions, seminars, presentation, and even provided a tour of the KC Streetcar Authority (thanks KC Streetcar Authority!). Various presenters from various backgrounds shared on the great work being done across the state to prepare DBEs for success, create a more diverse workforce, prevent fraud, and investigate new types of transportation innovation.

COMTO KC participated as an exhibitor during the symposium. It was our pleasure to network and engage with various DBEs, HUBs, Primes, and Transportation Agencies across the great state of Missouri. Michelle Word(COMTO member and Supplier Diversity Manager for Burns & McDonnell) was the keynote speaker during lunch on the first day of the symposium. She gave a candid analysis of the world of DBEs and what we all can do to create a more diverse and fair marketplace. Albert J. Byrd (COMTO Past President and MoDOT Community Liaison for Kansas City) was surprised by his colleagues with an award for “Outstanding Inclusion.” Vernal Stewart (COMTO member and CEO of SE3 LLC) was awarded the “Successful DBE of the Year” award.
